Kirsten Collings has firm roots within the High Peak and is well known for her legal status within the Buxton area through her work representing clients at both Buxton Police Station and Buxton Magistrates’ Court as well as further afield at the courts in Chesterfield and Derby. Kirsten not only spends a lot of her working time within Buxton but she also lives there, raising three children within her Buxton home all of whom attended local schools. Kirsten qualified as a solicitor in 2000 and joined Bakers solicitors in 2005 assisting Ian in developing the criminal department. The progression to partner is therefore a natural one for Kirsten and comes as a result of her hard work and commitment in representing and advising the local community who find themselves in difficult circumstances. Kirsten is also a High Court Advocate meaning that she is able to represent clients within all levels of the court system including the High Court and Court of Appeal.

David Parkes spent his first 6 years as a qualified solicitor at Harry Boodhoo and Co. in Manchester specialising in the area of family law. Following his move to Bakers Solicitors in 2011 he successfully became a member of the Children’s Panel, which allows him to represent children as well as parents and other parties in family law proceedings under the Children’s Act 1989. David represents people within the area of family law at courts within Derbyshire, Tameside and Manchester but has also been known to travel much further afield. David also became a parent himself in 2012 and is therefore extremely happy to be able be able to serve the local community in the area he also lives with his family. David is firmly rooted in Glossop as his great grandparents were once Mayor and Mayoress of Glossop and his grandmother once worked in the Rose and Crown Pub which is now the Bakers Office on the High Street in Glossop. David’s father also ran his own insurance business in the town for many years.

Ian is delighted to have two talented and committed solicitors on board and excited by the new prospects the new partnership will bring. Ian has worked hard at ensuring Bakers Solicitors is in a strong position to continue serving their clients and feels that the change in ownership will only strengthen this further.

If you would like to donate food to the appeal then please call into Baker’s office on the High Street with your donations. Small items are preferred as they make it easy for the food parcels to be packed and items should ideally have a long shelf life. Popular choices are tinned fruit, meat, vegetables, pies, puddings, soup or fish, packets of biscuits, jam, chocolates, UHT milk and any other items that can be stored at room temperature for a couple of months.

The accreditation is a positive addition to the courses already offered by Bakers under the BIIAB accreditation.

The course will be run locally from Bakers Solicitors, 89 High Street West, Glossop. This Food Safety course will be welcomed by those in the catering and licensing trade. It will no longer be necessary to travel out of the area to gain this important and highly regarded qualification.

Both the level 1 and level 2 course will be delivered by Jackie Evill who is an experienced CIEH registered trainer. Jackie Evill has been delivering the course on behalf of Derbyshire County Council for the past 14 years.

Level 1 is a half day course with examination aimed at those who serve food and is priced at just £55.00 plus VAT.
Level 2 is a 1 day course with examination aimed at those who prepare food and is priced at just £65.00 plus VAT.

The above course fees include materials, booklets, examination, certificate and light refreshments.

The first Level 2 course will take place on Thursday 6th September 2012. Additional dates will be added in due course.

A former top cop is leading the licensing service at Bakers Solicitors and is using the know-how gained from his years in the force.

Ex-Derbyshire Constabulary inspector Tony Dales is heading a licensing department offering a range of services for those in the trade, together with other local authority licensable activities, such as taxi services.

Tony outlined the service on offer at the latest Glossop Pub Watch meeting where it received a good reaction from members.

The Licensing Act 2003 is an extensive piece of legislation and Bakers’ Licensing department are acknowledged specialists in the field, which means that assistance can be offered with court and licensing hearings as well as offering a one-stop shop to meet all of these licensing needs.

To achieve this recognition the British Institute of Inn Keeping Awarding Body has awarded accreditation, which will allow the firm to train hopeful licensees and individuals that work in a licensing department.

The firm has approval to administer BIIAB qualifications including Award for Personal License Holders, Responsible Alcohol Retailing and Alcohol Awareness.

Tony and his team will help proprietors protect their license in the face of enforcement or prosecution and deal with appeals to court.

By working closely with the police and local licensing authority the Bakers’ service will allow licensees to keep free from trouble by complying with the law and reducing the number of alcohol related offences.  Clear and practical advice can be offered to anyone applying for a new license, varying an existing license, and those whose premises is the subject of a review.  Help can also be provided with matters relating to trading standards, planning enforcement, fire safety enforcement and regulatory crime.
